Robert creates paintings that are about looking. He is fascinated with how we look and see. If he sits in a cafe or walks down a road he’s constantly thinking about what he’s looking at. In reality he thinks this is a jumble of stuff highlighted with moments of intense concentration on just a few things – it may be the colour of a few leaves or the different colours on a tree in November. His paintings may appear abstract but they are trying to communicate this reality of looking and he attempts to capture these moments of intense visual concentration in the paintings. An intense amount of work, experimentation and research lies behind these water-based gouache paintings but Robert hopes they look simple and communicate directly. Robert became fascinated by the colour and light in the gouache paintings of the late British artist Patrick Heron and decided to try his own gouache paintings. However he didn’t achieve the results he was hoping for and so began two years of experimentation to get the results he now produces, playing around with different makes of paint and paper and different ways of applying paint to paper.
