Born in West Dorset, Sophie grew up in Yorkshire and trained at Winchester Art School in the 1970s, then lived in London before returning to the West Country in 1987. Sophie has taught art, part time, for twenty years, and has been making sculpture for over twenty five years. She has been a creative industry business advisor and currently teaches life sculpture. Sophie usually models form in soft materials, often reproducing her own work by casting into clay for firing, into bronze, resin and cast stone. Sophie also creates bold lightweight pieces with willow and found materials, recently making sculptures for festivals. Through working with the demands of the garden ornament industry in the 1990s, Sophie made sculptures in a variety of subjects and styles, from Buddhas to birdbaths, from owls to obelisks. Seeking to find her own voice has led her to working on collections of pieces exploring themes and materials, movement and stillness, bodies and patterns. Amongst her subjects are nudes, animals, and dance.
